PNWU’s Roots to Wings (RTW) program recently earned an Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity. The award recognizes colleges, universities and organizations that have established cutting-edge programs, events and initiatives devoted to the work of improving diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in STEM. A transformative co-mentoring health sciences education pathway program, RTW was recognized for its unique efforts to welcome individuals from marginalized populations to these disciplines.
“We are honored by this award,” said PNWU President Dr. Michael Lawler, “and very proud of the many students, faculty, and staff who have brought science, technology, engineering, and math to diverse communities through the Roots to Wings program.”
RTW brings six-through-twelfth grade students from Mt. Adams School District (MASD), Yakama Nation Tribal School (YNTS) and Chief Leschi School (CLS) together with PNWU’s osteopathic medical students, where they each develop a mutual mentoring relationship that deepens PNWU students’ understanding of both Native American and Mexican American cultures, values and traditions, as well as stimulate today’s youth to pursue an education in the health sciences. PNWU health sciences students learn firsthand the challenges of providing care in underserved populations and foster their desire to serve in rural communities as primary care physicians.
