On Thursday, April 18, PNWU hosted the Roots to Wings (RTW) Closing Ceremony.
Featuring an opening prayer from Yakama Elder Anthony Washines, Aztec Dancers, and inspiring speeches from students and university leaders – including a keynote address by Student Dr. Thejanee Liyanaarachchi which, according to ODEIB Program Coordinator Rona Cigner, “captured the essence of what brought us together” – the event honored over 100 co-mentoring program participants, including 33 PNWU students and their RTW scholars.
“We could not have done it without the support and collaboration of all the school districts,” said Cigner, “as well as support and collaboration with various departments across PNWU.”
“The co-mentors often laugh and giggle after Roots to Wings because of all the fun interactions that we have, and the stories we all excitedly share amongst our family and friends,” said Student Dr. Liyanaarachchi, speaking to more than 200 Closing Ceremony attendees. “Each of you brings unique perspectives that enhance our understanding and approach to teaching and mentoring. This diversity is not just our strength but also a vital component.”
“I hope that the students see themselves as being able to do anything,” added Student Dr. Liyanaarachchi, reflecting on the event. “We challenged them into new situations and all of them had the ability to adapt and jump in headfirst. Often, we were at awe of how incredibly talented these students are. I hope greatly they see themselves as more than what society defines them as.”
