About the Speaker
Dr. Jim O’Connell, MD (he/him) is the President of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He received his medical degree from Harvard University in 1982 and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. O’Connell has been dedicated to providing medical care to homeless individuals since 1985, when he founded the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. He established the nation’s first medical respite program and designed the first computerized medical record for a homeless program. Dr. O’Connell is also the author of “Stories from the Shadows: Reflections of a Street Doctor,” which highlights his experience and insights from three decades of service. His efforts are also chronicled in the New York Times Best Seller, “Rough Sleepers,” by Tracy Kidder.
