SNMA Previous Leadership

Bilal Ahsan

President

An immigrant to the US from Pakistan, I have found this new melting pot environment of mine extremely interesting to navigate through. Moving from a country where religious, racial, and ethnic differences weren’t as big of a disparity as they are in the US, I decided to dedicate my time and energy to creating an environment that works to destroy these disparities, fosters educational opportunities, and allows for complete equality in undergrad and now in medical school. I love to get to know people, their stories, build support systems, and am all about community. My days involve loads of coffee, soccer, mixed martial arts, and cuddles with my kitten Shadow with a huge side of med school. My goals with SNMA are to make PNWU a safe environment where students feel heard, cared for and their education is uncompromised.

Hansen Tang

Vice President

My name is Hansen Tang and I am the former Vice President of the Student National Medical Association. From a young age, I became involved with Lasallian-Vincentian Youth which showed me the value of serving those less privileged than myself. During my late teens, I began as an intern at the Immigration Institute of the Bay Area, working with undocumented youth in accessing education and health care services. I hope that with my experiences, I can provide the disenfranchised members of Yakima county with the same access to schooling and any interested youth a pathway into the medical field. My current hobbies include crabbing for Dungeness as well as day trading.

Amineta Sy

Secretary

My name is Amineta Sy, I’m from Mauritania, West Africa. I like reading everything about social justice and cultures. As the Secretary-general of SNMA, I would like to see our club as the epicenter of inclusivity and positive social changes at PNWU. As an immigrant, an ESL, and a Muslim Black person, my unique experiences have helped me connect with different groups of people. And SNMA being a place where diverse students work together toward a common goal, I couldn’t dream of a better place to start positive changes, not only at our school but in our communities.

Stephen Wu

Treasurer

Hello everyone, my name is Stephen and I’m officially the club treasurer. My background is somewhat interesting with parts of my childhood spent overseas and on the East Coast, although most of my time has been spent here in different parts of Washington.  In my free time, I enjoy cooking, playing/watching basketball, and playing video games, among many other things. Through SNMA, I am looking forward to promoting inclusivity on our campus as well as in the greater community.

Kimberton Nguyen

National Liaison

Born and raised in Portland Oregon, I saw first-hand how the zip code you grew up in determined your educational and social-economic status. As a first-generation American and college graduate, I’ve faced many barriers to higher education and experienced bias in the healthcare system by seeing how they treat non-English speaking immigrants (my parents). I would like to help minorities, especially BIPOC folks, achieve higher SES status through medical education in order to better healthcare outcomes for specially targeted minority groups. It is crucial to increase the amount of Black, Hispanic, and Native American physicians in the field. Through SNMA, we can hopefully shed light on social determinants of health and educate our class and community on how we can improve the care for our future patients.
