Wellness Spending Account

PNWU is committed to creating, promoting, and sustaining a culture of wellness that enables all PNWU students to achieve their desired state of health and well-being.

In an effort to encourage this culture of wellness, PNWU has created a Wellness Spending Account for PNWU students. The Wellness Spending Account is a personalized wellness health program that provides students with an allowance to support their engagement in wellness activities.

The Wellness Spending Accounts will be determined by the length of the program schedule for that year. Student Affairs will be responsible for managing these accounts.

The annual balance is to be used between July 1st and June 30th. Funds can be used at any time during the year up to the allowed spending limit. Eligible students begin the year with the full amount (based on the schedule above) in their spending account and can seek reimbursement through Student Affairs on a quarterly basis. Students will receive an email with detailed information near the end of each quarter.

Expenses incurred by anyone other than an eligible PNWU student will not be reimbursed.

Students are required to turn in receipts or redacted bank statements showing their name, date, and fees incurred. Handwritten receipts will not be accepted. If a qualifying expense exceeds the balance in the student’s account, only the remaining balance will be paid out.

Reimbursements payments are made as a direct deposit into the account set up during matriculation. Reimbursements usually take 1.5 months to be deposited, as it goes through Student Affairs and Finance departments. Once the annual balance limit is reached, no further reimbursement will be provided. Funds do not roll over; any funds that are not used prior to the end of your academic year are forfeited. Claims that are made after the start of the next fiscal year will not be accepted.

Eligible Activities

Any activity in which an eligible student participates for the specific purpose of improving and/or maintaining health and well-being will be considered for reimbursement. Eligible individuals who seek reimbursement for wellness purchases are strongly encouraged to review the list of eligible and ineligible wellness purchases (see below) before making purchases. Connect with Student Affairs if there are questions about the extent to which a purchase is eligible for reimbursement.

Examples of eligible purchases include (excluding sales tax):

  • Memberships and fees associated with gyms; health, fitness, aquatic, or other types of training or performance centers; athletic clubs; or other forms of community engagement spaces (e.g., Makerspace). This includes the use of punch cards or single use.
  • Fees associated with group classes, personal training, health and nutrition coaching not covered by a health and welfare plan, or other types of lessons (e.g., music, dance, martial arts, golf). This includes the use of punch cards or single classes.
  • Ski lift tickets, equipment rental, state and national parks passes, and registration fees for health and fitness-related events (e.g., 5K runs, marathons, weightlifting competitions).
  • Subscriptions to access health, fitness, or navigation apps, videos, or other forms of online content.

Purchases that are not eligible for reimbursement include clothing, equipment (purchase), devices, consumables, or medical services. Additionally, activities that are proven by empirical evidence to negatively impact individual or population health (e.g., tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use; eating an unhealthy diet) will not be reimbursed.

The wellness spending reimbursement form is made available at the end of the quarter via the forms page. The forms will be inactive at any other time. Student Affairs will notify students when they are accepting reimbursement forms online.
