SDM Leadership Council

The purpose of the Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences – School of Dental Medicine (SDM) Leadership Council is to support the School’s mission and vision through advancement and philanthropy. The SDM Dean selects members for the Leadership Council, creating a group of trusted advisors who represent a wide range of professions and vocations and have a commitment to the SDM’s mission to educate the next generation of primary care dentists.

Brigadier General (Ret.) Shan K. Bagby
Brigadier General (Ret.) Shan K. Bagby

Dr. Shan Bagby is a retired Army general officer, board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and healthcare executive. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from Rutgers University on an ROTC scholarship. He also holds a degree in dentistry from the University of Pittsburgh, a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Baylor University, and a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College. He completed his oral surgery residency training at MLK Jr./Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles California, and a trauma fellowship at University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

He served on active duty for over 26 years in a variety of clinical, teaching, administrative, and organizational leadership roles of increasing scope and responsibility. In his final assignment before retiring from the Army in January 2023 he served concurrently in three positions: as the 28th Chief of the Army Dental Corps; as the Commanding General of Regional Health Command-Central under United States Army Medical Command; and as the Deputy Director of the Small Market and Stand-Alone Organization under the Defense Health Agency. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is also board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the National Association of Corporate Directors. His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Parachutist Badge and various other military and civilian honors. He holds the Army Surgeon General’s “A” Proficiency Designator for leadership excellence and is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit(O2M3).

Marsha E. Butler, DDS
Marsha E. Butler, DDS

Dr. Marsha Butler is currently the President of The Butler Initiative, LLC, a Professional Consulting, Executive Coaching and Education service based in Alpharetta, Georgia.

For over 30 years, Dr. Butler served as Vice President, Global Oral Care, Colgate-Palmolive Company, responsible for global strategies, programs and policies that support Colgate’s professional and oral health initiatives around the world. Marsha interfaced with numerous international governments, dental and health organizations, academia, and NGO groups to promote programs aimed at the prevention of oral disease and the improvement of general and oral health.

In 1990, Marsha conceptualized, designed, and implemented a comprehensive oral health education program called “Bright Smiles, Bright Futures.” Under Marsha’s leadership, Bright Smiles, Bright Futures was implemented in over 80 countries around the world reaching over 1.3 billion children in 30 languages.

Marsha is a graduate of Howard University College of Dentistry with a B.S. degree in Microbiology and Chemistry. She has spent 34 years in Corporate America working at Johnson and Johnson, and Colgate-Palmolive providing a strong business background with a focus on health and wellness. Marsha has competed numerous business and leadership programs from Stanford University Business School, Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, Centers for Leadership, and several internal corporate leadership programs. Marsha has won numerous awards across a spectrum of public health, corporate leadership, research institutions and media communications.

Marsha is pursuing several areas of keen interest such as executive coaching, business consulting, writing children’s books and mentoring young leaders along the way.

Lisa L. Campbell-John

Lisa Campbell-John serves as the Vice President of Operations at Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic (YVFWC), overseeing the Health and Wellness Programs. With over 25 years of experience in non-profits and healthcare, Lisa has been instrumental in expanding community health initiatives, focusing on preventative care and health education.

At YVFWC, Lisa provides leadership and oversight to Health and Wellness programs, including Community Health Services, Outreach, Mobile Medical and Dental Program, the Northwest Community Action Center, Nutrition Services, and Integrated Care Services. She is dedicated to providing meaningful services that positively address the social factors impacting the health of our communities. Her leadership has been pivotal in expanding and enhancing the clinic’s enabling services across the Pacific Northwest.

Lisa has been influential in the development and implementation of several key programs:

  • School-Based Dental Sealant Program: This initiative aims to improve children’s oral health by providing dental sealants in schools, reducing the incidence of cavities and promoting long-term dental health.
  • Maternal Child Health Home Visiting Programs: These programs support expectant and new mothers through home visits, offering education, resources, and support to ensure healthy pregnancies and early childhood development.
  • Health Education Programs: Lisa has championed various health education initiatives that empower community members with the knowledge and tools to make informed health decisions.

Lisa holds a bachelor’s degree in business management, which has provided her with a strong foundation in organizational leadership and strategic planning.

Lisa is an enrolled tribal member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate in Sisseton, South Dakota. Growing up in a rural tribal community with limited resources has influenced her commitment to ensuring underserved populations have opportunities to improve and take control of their health. She ensures her team provides services that have a positive and measurable impact on the communities YVFWC serves.

Guillermo E. Chacon, DDS, FACS
Guillermo E. Chacon, DDS, FACS

Dr. Chacon received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Costa Rica in 1990 and completed a combined Prosthetic/Surgical Oral Implantology Fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital between 1993 and 1995.

He followed this with a one-year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship at The Ohio State University and a four-year residency at the University of Washington. From 2000 until 2009 he was in full time academics at The Ohio State University where he was the Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program, Chairman of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and affiliate faculty in the Prosthodontics Graduate Program.

He is currently an affiliate professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Washington and a consultant at Madigan Army Medical Center.

Dr. Chacon practices the full scope of his specialty at Oral and Facial Surgery Centers of Washington with a special focus on surgical dental implant reconstruction and orthognathic surgery. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Mark Cheney
Mark Cheney

Mark Cheney serves as the co-director of the South-Central Washington STEM Network at Educational Service District 105 in Yakima. In this position, he works with regional business and industry leaders, K-12 education, higher education, and community organizations to develop business/education partnerships. He is also the co-director of the Career Connect Washington Regional Network. In this role, he collaborates with partner organizations to convene regional stakeholders and to develop and bring to scale Career Connected Learning opportunities for in-school and out-of-school youth in South Central Washington.

Mark serves as the co-director of the Virtual STEM Role Model Project. This Education, Innovation, and Research grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education provides the opportunity for migrant and farmworker students to interact with STEM professionals and near-peers via virtual role model sessions. In addition, from 2010-2016 he served as the co-director of the Heritage 105 Project (HU 105), a residency-based program designed to reform teacher preparation. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, this innovative partnership between Heritage University and Educational Service District 105 partnered teaching candidates with classroom teachers in a hands-on, classroom-based, internship where candidates truly learned by doing. In 2014 the HU 105 Project was honored by the United States Department of Education as a model program for the development and retention of new teachers.

Mark grew up in Yakima County and has spent the last 32 years in K-16 education. As a classroom teacher, science coordinator, and district administrator, he has dedicated his career to ensuring that ALL students have access to, and the support needed to succeed in a high-quality STEM education.

Susan Ferrante
Susan Ferrante

Susan joined A-dec in November of 2009 as the School and Government Territory Manager for the Northeast Region. In January 2016, she was promoted to S&G Regional Manager and now in her current role since the end of August 2020.

As Global Director of Institutional Sales, Susan is responsible for developing strategies and programs to maximize the company’s efforts for School and Government agency accounts. Her focus is on the achievement of sales goals by product mix, teamwork, and synergy of the sales force, along with the responsibility for the development and maintenance of relationships with the School and Government network. Susan’s sales experiences include Senior Manager of Academic Relations for Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, Northeast School and Institution Manager for Hu-Friedy Mfg. Co, Inc., and Eastern Regional Manager for General Scientific Corporation.

Susan holds a degree in Dental Hygiene from State University at New York and prior to entering sales, practiced clinically for 13 years. During her time at A-dec, Susan has held several professional positions including Board Member for the American Dental Education Association, Chief Executive Officer of CRET, Center for Research and Education in Technology, and Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Dental Education.

Steve Geiermann, DDS
Steve Geiermann, DDS

Dr. Steve Geiermann, a retired Captain in the U.S. Public Health Service, recently retired after 15 years as the Senior Manager addressing access, community oral health infrastructure and capacity within the American Dental Association’s Council on Advocacy for Access and Prevention.

He served in the Indian Health Service and Federally Qualified Health Centers as well as being a HRSA regional dental consultant and project officer within the National Health Service Corps and the HIV/AIDS Bureau. He currently serves on the boards of the American Institute of Dental Public Health (AIDPH), the Dental Patient Safety Foundation, and the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP), as well as the Oral Health Progress and Equity Network (OPEN). He is the chair of the Best Practices Committee within the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors. Steve is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Council for Excellence in Government.

John Gibbons, DMD
John Gibbons, DMD

Dr. John Gibbons is a pediatric dentist who has practiced for over 30 years in Silverdale, Washington. Before his position as the Past President of WSDA he had the opportunity to serve nationally as the Western District Trustee for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and is the Past President of both the Western Society of Pediatric Dentistry and the Washington State Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (WSAPD). Currently, he is the Public Policy Advocate for the WSAPD.

His passion is advocacy, especially issues related to the underserved and has worked on two Medicaid bills that were passed into law, a dental Medicaid audit bill and an ABCD Expansion bill that brought better access for children with disabilities.

Dr. Gibbons received his DMD from Washington University School of Dental Medicine in St. Louis and completed a two-year pediatric dental residency at Oregon Health Sciences University. He is a graduate of the AAPD’s Leadership Institutes and received Executive Leadership Certificates from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University and Wharton School of Executive Education.

Kurt Labberton, DDS
Kurt Labberton, DDS

Dr. Kurt Labberton was born and raised in Yakima. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in 1973 where he majored in Oceanography. He was selected by Admiral Rickover for Nuclear Propulsion training and served as a commissioned officer aboard the USS Tecumseh SSBN 628 (Blue Crew) and on the initial crew of the USS Memphis SSN 691.

After completing his naval service, he attended the University of Washington School of Dentistry, graduating in 1983. He then re-entered the Navy and completed a one-year General Practice Residency at the US Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, California. Following assignments aboard the USS Sierra AD-18 he returned to Yakima and began his private practice.

Dr. Labberton has served as President of the Yakima County Dental Society, Chair of the Pacific Northwest Dental Conference. member of the Arcora Foundation Board and member and Chair of Delta Dental of Washington. He is a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and has been selected for membership in the American College of Dentists.

Barbara Nordquist
Barbara Nordquist

Ms. Nordquist is the President and Principal Advisor at Nordquist Advisors, LLC, an advisory firm that helps organizations negotiate the unique environment of the dental market, and partner effectively with dental schools and the dental education channel to better meet their goals.

A native of England, Barbara has spent over 35 years in dentistry, the last 30 years in the USA in positions of increasing responsibility focused on dental academic institutions. Prior to starting Nordquist Advisors, Barbara was Vice President, Academic & Professional Relations for Danaher KaVo Kerr (now Envista Corp. after its 2019 spin-off). Prior to joining Danaher Kavo Kerr, Barbara held long term positions at Bayer Dental (UK) , Coltene/Whaledent (now Coltene) and then at Ultradent Products and Discus Dental.

Widely recognized as a pioneer and leader in building educational partnerships between teaching institutions and dental companies, Barbara is an active board member of several major dental organizations. Barbara actively mentors at dental schools and within the industry. She has a passion for giving back and supporting individuals in all aspects of dentistry. Barbara supports CF Charities, an organization that helps individuals in under-served communities develop the education and experience to pursue careers in the dental industry.

Cheri Podruzny, RDH, MSDH
Cheri Podruzny, RDH, MSDH

Cheri Podruzny is a graduate of Central Washington University and Eastern Washington University, receiving her bachelor’s degree in Allied Health Science and master’s degree in Dental Hygiene respectively. She has been a full-time faculty member in the Yakima Valley College Dental Hygiene Program for 38 years, serving the past 15 years as Program Director.

Along with her academic career, she also practices part-time clinical dental hygiene with several local dentists, community health clinics, and YVC faculty practice.

She has been active with the Central Regional Dental Testing Service as a Dental Hygiene Examiner and sub-committee member for development of the Local Anesthesia written and clinical examinations.

Kristi H. Trickett, DO
Kristi H. Trickett, DO

Dr. Trickett received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima, WA. She completed her Family Medicine Residency in 2019 from Central Washington Family Medicine Residency in Yakima, WA.

Dr. Trickett is the Medical Director at the Yakima Union Gospel Mission Medical Care Center, which is a free clinic that provides medical care for uninsured and underinsured patients in the Yakima Valley. Her position at the YUGM provides a great resource for students with research development, opportunities for interprofessional collaboration, as well as a student learning site.

Dr. Trickett’s special interests include Spanish, International travel, and Foster/Adoption.

To request a tour of our campus, please visit our PNWU website to register. These tours are scheduled on the fourth Tuesday of the month, excluding PNWU’s Open House dates. PNWU-SDM tours are intended for those who are not applying for the current admission cycle.

Accreditation

As of August 2024, the SDM has received initial accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
