Student Doctor Oak Sonfist (OMS II) was recently selected as Co-Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) for the Medical Student Pride Alliance (MSPA). MSPA is an activist and social organization committed to empowering sexual and gender minority medical students and allies, increasing the number of physicians trained in LGBTQ-inclusive healthcare, and addressing the unique needs of LGBTQIA+ communities through research, advocacy, education, and service.
“I’m honored to work with the LGBTQIA+ community as a member of national leadership for the MSPA and as a future medical doctor,” said Sonfist. “Together, we will only become stronger!”
As co-director, Sonfist will co-lead the national organization in establishing a Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, which will aim to ensure that the needs of underrepresented LGBTQIA+ medical students — particularly those who may not be directly represented on the organization’s national leadership team — are identified and supported.
“Student Doctor Sonfist is a respected leader and will do a great job in this national position supporting LGBTQIA+ communities,” said Dr. Michael Lawler, president of PNWU.
Sonfist was selected for the role following their impressive array of DEI advocacy work, including direct involvement in the development and creation of PNWU’s Office of DEI, subsequent work as the student representative on the President’s DEI Council, SGA leadership positions directly related to DEI advocacy, and more.
“Student Doctor Sonfist is passionate about teaching and collaborating, and is a consummate team player,” explained PNWU’s Chief Diversity Officer Dr. Mirna Ramos-Diaz. “They integrate both their personal journey of resiliency and compassion with practical advocacy for the marginalized populations they encounter.”
