Dr. Stephen Litchfield and PNWU Student Doctor Sarah Tucker were recently selected as the 2021 recipients of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. The pair was selected by the Class of 2021 Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) PNWU Chapter for their ability to demonstrate both clinical excellence and outstanding compassion in the delivery of care while continuing to show respect for patients, their families, and healthcare colleagues.
The Leonard Tow award is provided to individuals that exhibit extraordinary empathy and humanism in all walks of their life.
“Spending time with Dr. Litchfield in the first two years of medical school, I quickly learned how kind and compassionate he was,” explained an anonymous voter. “He always took the time to listen to any questions I had, and I can see this as a reflection of his patient care. I don’t know of any student who did not appreciate his kindness and willingness to teach.”
“I think she is the perfect blend of compassionate, empathetic, brilliant, and service-oriented,” explained another voter in their nomination of Student Doctor Tucker. “She organized the first developmental club on campus and saw a need for medical students to better learn how to treat such patients. She goes out of her way to help anyone around her and is willing to give up her time to do so. She is always respectful and professional, whether that is in school or outside of school. She also took on organizing the funeral services for our cadaver lab, which she did on her own time. This just shows again her kindness and willingness to help out. Everyone that gets to know her can immediately see her kind heart, and her patients will be so lucky to have her.”
