On Friday, November 4, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., PNWU’s Biomedical Ethics and Family Medicine clubs will co-host a Red Cross Blood Drive in the University Conference Center (UCC). Organizers encourage PNWU faculty, staff, students, friends, and families to sign up, with the ultimate goal of donating more than 50 pints of life-saving blood.
“The need for blood products is great and constant,” explained PNWU Student Doctor Tyler Lulich, OMS II, who serves as the Family Medicine Interest Group’s vice president of academic affairs. “The blood that is donated goes directly to people who need it in our northwest region, and a single donation can help to save up to three lives. This is a very direct way to reach out and help patients.”
Two donation types will be available: a whole blood donation, which takes up to one hour, and a Power Red donation which takes up to 90 minutes for donation. The drive also seeks volunteers to assist in set-up and take-down, as well as hourly volunteers for donor check-in. Volunteering can count as TOUCH hours.
“The actual donation typically takes about 10 minutes,” Lulich encouraged. “Even if you are nervous about needles, you can listen to music, bring a friend for encouragement, and take the time you need afterward to recuperate. You can truly save lives.”
