Last weekend, PNWU hosted the Anato-Bee. A national high school outreach initiative promoting education in the anatomical sciences, the Anato-Bee tests high school students’ knowledge in anatomy, embryology, histology, and diagnostic skills through a spelling-bee inspired format.
Featuring top-scoring students from a recent local competition at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA, PNWU’s event served as the western regional host of the inaugural competition, which was held at four locations over the weekend: PNWU (Western), University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine (Northern), Jefferson University Sidney Kimmel Medical College (Eastern), and Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Auburn (Southern).
High school participants from all over the western U.S., including Arizona and Southern California, excelled in the local stage of the competition, traveling to Yakima for the regional event. Top placing students at each regional competition were awarded scholarships to attend a summer program of their choice that focuses on the anatomical and/or clinical sciences.
In addition to a diverse group of competitors, the on-campus event featured 50 student and faculty volunteers from PNWU and CWU, including PNWU College of Osteopathic Medicine Dean Dr. Thomas Scandalis, who provided the welcome address on Saturday, and PNWU Provost Dr. Wayne Miller, who spoke at the awards ceremony on Sunday.
