Dr. Malcolm Cutchin, professor and director of research in PNWU’s School of Occupational Therapy, recently had his seventh edited volume, Handbook on Aging and Place, published by UK academic publisher Edward Elgar.
Working with co-editor Graham Rowles, Cutchin and Rowles recruited lead authors for 20 chapters and then composed the other three chapters of the book together. Cutchin says the final author list includes 45 contributors from 11 countries and topical coverage of all continents except Antarctica.
The book’s blurb states: “Moving away from studies of aging in place, this forward-looking Handbook focuses on aging and place, offering a broader scope and more nuanced, complex and enlightening understanding of these two intertwined universals of human experience. Not only examining the latest literature, the chapters also challenge current thinking on the many intersections, opportunities and issues around place and aging that need to be addressed through policy and practice.”
Cutchin notes that the book, while taking almost three years to complete, was well worth the effort.
“We were able to include the foremost experts in environmental and geographical gerontology,” said Dr. Cutchin, “and they produced outstanding, state-of-the-art scholarship on the topic. The chapter authors are a who’s who of the field and their chapters – most of which run over 10,000 words – provide a rich source of material that will serve scholars and students for years to come.”
He added that working with Rowles on the project was especially satisfying because Rowles has been a mentor, friend, and colleague for the last 30 years.
