The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) is a club on campus that aims to unite and empower current and future physicians from all medical fields. The club focuses on providing services, mentorship, and education to advocate for the health of the Hispanic & Latina/o/x community.
At the national level, the club aims to increase representation and support for healthcare professionals from underrepresented backgrounds and raise awareness of health issues affecting Hispanic communities. Additionally, the club strives to reduce health disparities faced by minority patients in the healthcare system. By providing a voice for Latino medical students and promoting their retention at all levels, the club aims to bring together students from all medical professions.
The club’s core values are unity, service, mentorship, education, and advocacy. As a club on campus, we aim to establish a safe and inclusive environment for all Latino students, including those in various cross-campus programs with WSU.
In 2022, the percentage of Latino students was only 11.4%, but by 2024, it had increased to 18.3%. We want to continue to advocate for an increase in Hispanic physicians through outreach programs and communication across the Lower Valley. Currently, only 6% of all healthcare workers are Latino, despite the country’s Latino population being 19%.
Last month, we had a fun Lotería night where students could learn how to play Lotería, while learning the cultural significance of the game and enjoy some tacos. This allowed students to interact with each other and take some time off from school.
Our next event will be held on October 28th at 5 pm. We’ll be serving Pan Dulce and Cafecito while we go over the history of Día de los Muertos and its cultural significance, including the coloring of sugar skulls.
