PNWU Dental Dean Discusses Dental Access and Innovation on Yakama Nation Radio

On Wednesday, March 26, Dr. Fotinos Panagakos, founding dean of PNWU’s School of Dental Medicine (SDM), joined Yakama Nation Radio (1490 AM) to discuss his innovative new program, the urgent need for dental care in rural and underserved communities, and PNWU’s innovative approach to training future healthcare leaders.

Many rural areas, including the Yakima Valley, face a severe shortage of dental professionals, leaving residents without essential care. Dr. Panagakos emphasized the critical role of dentists in detecting broader health issues like diabetes and hypertension, highlighting the need for accessible oral healthcare.

Unlike traditional programs that keep students in classrooms for two years, he explained, our SDM places students in community-based clinics after just one year. This hands-on approach ensures graduates are well-prepared to serve in underserved areas, including tribal nations such as the Yakama Nation.

“We want to train dentists who see themselves practicing in places like Toppenish,” said Dr. Panagakos, stressing the importance of local partnerships in expanding dental care access.

This episode continues PNWU’s monthly collaboration with Yakama Nation Radio, which launched in February with Dr. Heather Fritz, founding dean of the School of Occupational Therapy.

Stay tuned for future episodes, as PNWU works to strengthen healthcare access across the region. PNWU representatives go live on Yakama Nation Radio on the final Wednesday of each month at noon.
