Dr. Jared Darlian, PNWU-COM Class of 2021, recently had the distinguished honor of representing the U.S. Navy at the Mid-Winter Plenary Workshop for the Interallied Confederation of Medical Reserve Officers (CIOMR) of NATO. Held at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, from January 25-31, the workshop brought together junior medical officers from allied military branches across NATO nations.
While in Brussels, Dr. Darlian participated in the Junior Medical Reserve Officer Workshop (JMROW), a unique platform for young medical professionals, including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, administrators, researchers, and more — to collaborate on global military medical response strategies.

As the only Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from the United States in the delegation, Dr. Darlian embraced the opportunity to showcase the strengths of osteopathic medicine on an international stage.
“At PNWU, we were taught to approach challenges from multiple perspectives, emphasizing solutions rather than obstacles.”
“At PNWU, we were taught to approach challenges from multiple perspectives, emphasizing solutions rather than obstacles,” explained Dr. Darlian. “This mindset was crucial during the workshop, where we explored how to develop a unified allied health response for global military operations.”
Dr. Darlian credits PNWU’s emphasis on delivering healthcare in resource-limited environments for preparing him well for the complexities of military medicine.

“In the military, resources are often stretched thin,” he said, “requiring coordination across vast areas. The problem-solving approach instilled at PNWU helped me contribute meaningfully to discussions about improving international medical collaboration.”
Dr. Darlian also spoke passionately about the importance of having osteopathic voices in international medical discussions.
“Our holistic approach emphasizes health and prevention, which aligns well with global health initiatives.”
“Osteopathic physicians bring an invaluable perspective to healthcare,” he said. “Our holistic approach emphasizes health and prevention, which aligns well with global health initiatives.”
At the conference, he embraced the incredible opportunity to educate and build worldwide awareness. “Explaining our philosophy and training to international colleagues helped bridge gaps and foster greater understanding between different medical disciplines,” he added.
“Whether you’re in the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) or exploring global health initiatives, these experiences broaden your understanding of medicine and deepen your ability to collaborate across borders,” said Dr. Darlian. “The friendships and professional relationships I’ve built through these opportunities have been truly remarkable.”
