Student Core Didactic IPE Session: Safe & Effective Communication

Emphasizing Communication for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice

In this core IPE session, students will enhance their understanding of how effective communication enhances teamwork and contributes to better patient outcomes. Through this activity, students will have the opportunity to practice and develop communication skills to convey information effectively in a safe and supportive learning environment.

In this session, students will engage in a virtual, team-based activity to acquire and apply structured healthcare communication tools and techniques. To prepare, students will review and choose from a menu of scenarios that mimic various healthcare situations to create a communication plan using the (I)SBAR tool & worksheet. In the didactic session, students participate in a team-based activity, employing the (I)SBAR technique to present their communication plan within small teams. Constructive peer feedback is given and received using a provided rubric to students refine their communication skills, identify strengths, and address any areas for improvement.

This session is strategically designed to enrich the student experience by applying the core Interprofessional Education Collaborative’s (IPEC) competencies. These include teams & teamwork, values & ethics, and roles & responsibilities, with a specific emphasis on communication. Through these immersive activities, we aim to not only deepen students’ understanding of their respective roles within healthcare teams, but also foster a collaborative mindset that aligns with the core principles of interprofessional practice.
