Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer

Program: Post Program Grants – Pediatric Oncology Student Training 

Summary: The POST Program is a summer research internship designed for undergraduate, graduate and medical students interested in pursuing a career in pediatric oncology research. The goal of the ALSF POST program is to expose students to the field of pediatric oncology research while experiencing a real-time research project. It is expected that students will develop practical research skills and engage in a mentoring relationship with a pediatric oncology researcher. Stipend approximately $4,000. 

POST provides an opportunity for students to train with a mentor who is conducting research in the field of pediatric oncology. A mentor/mentee pair is a prerequisite for applying. Students may join a research project underway in a mentor’s lab or begin an original investigation with the mentor. Although the mentor and the student should work together on the application, it should be submitted online by the mentor. Students may train at an institution other than their own college, graduate or medical school, and the internship should last 8-10 weeks during late spring/summer over a time period mutually acceptable to both the mentor and the student.

American Heart Association 

Program: Student Scholarships in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke 

Summary: Three scholarship programs: Student Scholarship in Cardiovascular Disease, Student Scholarship in Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke; and Student Scholarship in Cardiovascular Surgery. Each includes a $2,000 scholarship (paid to the institution of the selected student) specifically for research. The Cerebrobascular Disease and Stroke and the Cardiovascular Surgery Scholarships also include a possible $750 travel grant pending attendance at the national conference.  Scholarship funds may be used for student expenses, lab fees, or other costs incurred by the student during the project.

Program: Summer Intern Scholarship in Cardiothoracic Surgery 

Summary: The Summer Intern Scholarship in Cardiothoracic Surgery aims to introduce cardiothoracic surgery to first and second year medical students in a North American medical school during an eight-week summer placement within an AATS member’s cardiothoracic surgery department. The scholarship provides grants to recipients in order to cover living expenses during their eight weeks of training.

American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine 

Program: AACOM’s Osteopathic Health Policy Internship (OHPI) Program 

Summary: During this unique eight-week virtual internship, osteopathic medical students will have the opportunity to develop intimate knowledge of federal healthcare and higher education policy and make a foundational impact on public policy formulation. Program: Summer Neurosurgical Research Fellowship 

Summary: The program offers fellowships to medical studdents who have completed one or more years of medical school, and wish to spend a summer working in a neurosurgical laboratory, mentored by a neurosurgical investigator sponsor.

American Brain Tumor Association 

Program: American Brain Tumor Association Jack and Fay Netchin Medical Student Summer Fellowships 

Summary: $3,000 grants awarded to medical students who intend to spend a summer conducting brain tumor research with esteemed scientist mentors. The program’s intent is to inspire talented medical students to pursue a career in neuro-oncology research.

American College of Gastroenterology 

Program: American College of Gastroenterology – Summer Scholars Program 

Summary: The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) is committed to outreach through scholarship and mentorship. We believe that there should be a focus on undergraduate medical trainees underrepresented in medicine for mentorship and research to increase representation of these groups in gastroenterology. Other: Eligible Participants There are two criteria that students must meet in order to be eligible for the summer fellowship. First, eligible students must be currently enrolled in an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school, be in good academic standing at their program and be in either their first, second or third year of medical school. American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) 

Program: Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) Program 

Summary: Sponsored by the National Institute on Aging (NIA). The MSTAR Program provides medical students with an enriching experience in aging-related research and geriatrics, with the mentorship of top experts in the field. This program introduces students to research and academic experiences early in their training that they might not otherwise have during medical school.   Students participate in an eight- to twelve-week (or 2-3 months, depending on the training site) structured research, clinical, and didactic program in geriatrics, appropriate to their level of training and interests. Research projects are offered in basic, translational, clinical, or health services research relevant to older people. Most scholars will do their training and research during the summer months. They will also be invited to submit an abstract to present a poster at the Annual Meeting of the American Geriatrics Society.

American Osler Society 

Program: The William B. Bean Student Research Award 

Summary: Award for support of research in the broad areas of medical history and medical humanities. Candidates must be currently matriculated students in approved schools of medicine in the United States or Canada. American Society for Nutrition 

Program: Science Policy Fellowship 

Summary: One year fellowship. The intent of the Science Policy Fellowship is to allow for an expanded understanding of current nutrition policy issues and initiatives. The Science Policy Fellowship provides recipients with the opportunity to gain an enhanced perspective on public policy issues related to nutrition and facilitates the acquisition of skills and tools necessary to become well-informed advocates for nutrition research and policy.

American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 

Program: Medical Student Rotation for Underrepresented Populations 

Summary: The Medical Student Rotation (MSR) provides financial support for U.S. medical students from populations underrepresented in medicine and who are interested in oncology as a career to experience a minimum 4-week clinical or clinical research rotation. The oncology rotation can take place in a private practice, hospital or academic setting, with a focus on either direct patient care or research, provided that the research is clinically-oriented. 

Each participant will be paired with a mentor for the rotation. The role of the mentor is to oversee the student in his or her rotation as well as to provide ongoing academic and career guidance following the rotation experience. Participants may preselect a mentor for their rotation or ask for assistance in arranging a mentoring partnership with an ASCO member. Following the rotation, recipients will have the opportunity to attend the ASCO Annual Meeting where they can interact with oncology professionals.    

The Medical Student Rotation award includes a $5,000 stipend for the rotation plus $1,500 for travel to the ASCO Annual Meeting. An additional $2,000 will be provided to support the student’s mentor.

Summary: An eight-week funded summer externship designed to expose medical students to inpatient and outpatient clinical practice, the human side of patient care and respected physiatrists. Summary: Introduces medical students from backgrounds that are under-represented in medicine to the discipline of radiation oncology early in their medical education. Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine

Program: Heart, Lung and Blood Summer Research Program 

Summary: The Heart, Lung and Blood Summer Research Program is designed to engage 12 diverse undergraduates and 8 medical students in state-of-the art biomedical research in cardiovascular, pulmonary, hematological and sleep disorders research. Stipend – $1750 per month, minimum two months ($3500). Students who participate for longer periods will have additional pro-rated stipend support. We will provide up to $500 in travel expenses from your home to Cleveland (and back!). Some support toward dormitory housing (approximate housing cost before support: $1700) may be available. 

Students who belong to groups underrepresented in biomedical sciences are eligible to apply. In general, this includes students who are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Latino, Puerto Rican, Pacific Islanders, students from low-income families, or those with disabilities as defined by the NIH. Please note that you must be a US citizen or Permanent resident to participate. 

Participants will enjoy weekly seminars that highlight research in these disciplines, as well as activities that encourage interaction among all students engaged in summer research.  

The program will culminate in a poster session required for all undergraduates and non-CWRU medical students. CWRU medical students will present their work in the subsequent CWRU Lepow Day event.

Program: Summer Oncology Research Fellowship 

Summary: This NIH supported Summer Oncology Research Fellowshiop is designed for medical students in the summer between their first and second year who are considering a biomedical career that involves cancer research.  This research fellowship is held at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and at the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Keck School of Medicine at University of Southern California.  Students are matched with mentoring teams according to interests and research experience. Crohn’s Colitis Foundation 

Program: Student Research Fellowship 

Summary: Offers financial support for students to spend time performing research on topics relevant to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), or Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis for a minimum of 10 weeks.  Candidates may be undergraduate, medical, or graduate students (not yet engaged in thesis research) in accredited US institutions.  Award amount Up to $2500 (one time payment). Up to 16 student research fellowships will be available for full time research with a mentor investigating a subject relevant to IBD. The mentor must be a faculty member who directs a research project highly relevant to the study of IBD at an accredited institution.  Awards are payable to the institution not the student.

Program: Program for Medical Students: Visiting Research Internship Program 

Summary: The Visiting Research Internship Program (VRIP) is an eight-week mentored, summer research program designed to enrich medical students’ interest in research and health-related careers, particularly clinical/translational research careers. 

In addition to a mentored clinical/translational research experience, VRIP students participate in weekly seminars with Harvard faculty focusing on topics such as research methodology, health disparities, ethics, and career paths. Participants also have the opportunity to participate in offerings of other Harvard Medical School programs such as career development seminars and networking events. Hemostasis & Thrombosis Research Society 

Program: Student Research Award Program 

Summary: Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Society (HTRS) Student Research Awards (SRA) comprise an 8-10 week program aimed at introducing medical, PhD, MD/PhD, and PharmD students to the field of hemostasis and thrombosis by supporting the students’ work on targeted research projects focused on hemostasis and thrombosis.  Proposed projects may be lab-based, clinical or epidemiologic in design. The experience includes collaboration with a research mentor, a $5,000 stipend and a $2,000 travel allowance to present at a 2022/2023 scientific meeting. Sponsoring lab/organization receives a $1,000 stipend. As part of the Student Research Award Program, students are paired with research mentors.  Mentor responsibilities include assisting the applicant with the development of a research project plan and then, if the applicant is successful, overseeing the research project and providing career guidance and support.  Mentors/labs receive a $1,000 stipend.

Program: Silberstein Pediatric Orthopaedics Research Fellowship 

Summary: The Silberstein Research Fellowship, named in honor of Dr. Charles E. Silberstein, is a fellowship program for students in the first year of medical school seeking an early start to clinical experience in the orthopaedic field. This is a two-to three-month commitment during the summer. Massachusetts General Hospital 

Program: Summer Research Trainee Program 

Summary: Twenty students are selected from a nationwide competition to join SRTP. Each student is assigned to a specific MGH laboratory, clinical site, health policy, or health services research area where they undertake an original research project under the mentorship and guidance of a Mass General Hospital (MGH) investigator. Assignments are carefully considered and are made with the student’s research and career interests in mind. In addition to this unique research experience, students will gain knowledge through weekly seminars at MGH, attend career development workshops and networking events, and have opportunities for clinical shadowing.

Mathematica

Program: Summer Fellowships Pursuing Self-Directed, Issues-Oriented Research 

Summary: The Summer Fellowship Program at Mathematica welcomes doctoral students to spend 12 weeks at one of Mathematica’s office locations. Fellows will work on their own independent research project (typically their dissertation), which will intersect with one or more of Mathematica’s focus areas. Fellows will be mentored by senior staff, learn about Mathematica and its work, and have the opportunity to shadow Mathematica research projects and proposals. At the conclusion of the fellowship, fellows will present a seminar on their research project. Each fellow will receive a stipend plus in project-related expenses.

Medical University of South Carolina

Program: Drug Abuse Research Training Fellowship Program 

Summary: The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) DART program offers a 10 week summer research fellowship for students interested in learning more about research. The goal of the DART Summer Fellowship Program is to introduce promising students to research, both basic science and clinical in nature, and afford them the opportunity to work closely with a research mentor and his/her investigative team.  The program is open to undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. During the fellowship, students spend 10 weeks working full-time (40 hours per week) in their research mentor’s lab. Students can gain experience collecting data, running analyses, training through weekly didactic seminars, scientific writing, and presenting their work at the annual Summer Research Day. Stipend $4,000.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society

Program: Clinical Mentorship for Medical Students 

Summary: The National MS Society offers a four-week clinical mentorship to students who have completed at least one year of medical school. The experience will expose students to the diagnosis and comprehensive management of MS under the tutelage of MS experts.   

The student will work with neurologists and other clinicians specializing in MS (e.g., urologists, neuro-ophthalmologists, physiatrists, nurses, radiologists, rehab therapists, etc.) and observe most aspects of MS specialty care. 

Over the course of the four weeks the student will spend time at one or more Centers for Comprehensive MS Care and may spend time at community practice locations and other settings (e.g. rehabilitation, long term care, clinical trials research).  

The mentorship is full-time and takes place Monday-Friday in the month of June during regular business hours, with possible evening hours (no more than three or four nights over the course of four weeks). Oregon Health Sciences University 

Program: The Campagna Scholarship 

Summary: A 10-Week Summer Research Scholarship available for United States medical students intending a career in neurological surgery. The Campagna Scholarship was endowed in 2006 by leading Oregon neurosurgeon Dr. Mario Campagna and his wife, Edith. The scholarship supports a 10-week summer semester of research under the supervision of a neurosurgical mentor at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and residence expenses in Portland, Oregon. Parkinson’s Foundation

Program: Summer Fellowship 

Summary: The Summer Student Fellowships Program supports students, specifically advanced undergraduates and medical students, in their pursuit of Parkinson’s-related summer research projects. The goal of the Parkinson’s Foundation Summer Student Fellowships is to cultivate students’ early interest in helping to solve, treat and end Parkinson’s and providing the tools they need to transition into leaders in the field.  Fellows work under the close supervision of a sponsor who is an expert in the Parkinson’s community and oversees the project. 

The summer fellowship is 10 weeks of clinical or laboratory work with a $4,000 award. Fellows are invited to apply for up to $1,000 in travel funds to attend a related scientific conference to present their research upon project completion. The award supports the student’s summer research, defraying tuition costs of research credits or supplementing living or housing costs. This award may be taxable; the Parkinson’s Foundation sends an IRS form 1099 to the recipient at the end of the calendar year.

Program: Robert L. Mayock Student Research Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine 

Summary: The Robert L. Mayock Student Research Fellowship will provide opportunities for medical students and undergraduate students in their senior year of college to work full-time for eight to 10 weeks during the summer/fall in one of the research laboratories of the Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Division of the University of Pennsylvania. Society for Vascular Surgery

Program: Student Research Fellowship 

Summary: The intent of the fellowship award is to further the student’s education and introduce the student to the application of rigorous scientific methods to clinical problems and underlying biologic processes important to patients with vascular disease.  Successful applications are hypothesis-focused and achievable in the research period proposed. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Program: Pediatric Oncology Educational Program 

Summary: The Pediatric Oncology Education program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is funded by the National Institutes of Health / National Cancer Institute. The POE program offers a unique opportunity for students preparing for careers in the biomedical sciences, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, or public health to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. The POE program provides a short-term training experience (summer internship) in either laboratory research or clinical research. The minimum time requirement for our program is 10 weeks at St. Jude for those currently in medical school . Undergraduate participants in our program will receive a $400/week subsistence allowance, and all others will receive $480/week. We hope to be able to increase the POE 2022 subsistence allowance to $600/week for all participants.  

A primary goal of the POE program is to encourage students to pursue a career in cancer research. Thus, we are particularly interested in highly qualified students with a serious career interest in cancer research, either as a clinical scientist or laboratory-based research scientist.

Program: The Margaret E. Mahoney Fellowship in Health Policy 

Summary: Program offers a unique opportunity for outstanding medical, dental, public health, public policy, and graduate nursing students to conduct summer research projects on early childhood health and development and/or some aspect of health care delivery transformation for vulnerable populations with an emphasis on the policy implications of the research findings. Thomas Jefferson University

Program: Summer Externship in Radiation Oncology 

Summary: The Department of Radiation Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University & Hospitals in Philadelphia, PA, is offering the annual Simon Kramer Society Externship in Radiation Oncology. This externship was established for the purpose of exposing medical students to the discipline of radiation oncology and provides up to two students each year with the opportunity to spend six weeks in our Department working on a research project and participating in clinical and educational activities. You must be a first or second year student in good standing in an accredited U.S. Medical College in order to be considered for this externship. The start and end dates will be determined with the students after the selection process, but must occur between June and August. 

Eligibility: Open to first & second year medical college students. 

Stipend: We are able to provide each extern with a $750 stipend which will be paid within two weeks of their arrival at Jefferson. We are not able to provide any assistance with travel, housing, meals, or other expenses. There may be an opportunity for housing on the Jefferson campus during the externship (which we can help you explore) but this is also at the student’s

University of Pittsburgh

Program: IMPACT Adolescent and Child Psychiatry Pre-Doctoral Fellowship 

Summary: The IMPACT fellowship program is a paid, eight-week, pre-doctoral research elective offered each year for up to four medical students. Most students complete the fellowship during the summer between their first and second years of medical school, although other times may be available. Each student is paired with a mentor from our training faculty whose work complements the student’s research interests. Fellows in the program will work on a project that may lead to a scientific presentation and/or a peer-reviewed publishable product. In addition to performing research, fellows also shadow mental health professionals in the clinic. 

There is no formal application deadline for the pre-doctoral program; however, we stop accepting students after the maximum of four fellows has been reached for the year. Most students submit applications between January and February for the upcoming summer. Application to this program is limited to medical students. We welcome applications from students at the University of Pittsburgh as well as from other schools throughout the United States.

Program: Summer Training Program 

Summary: A 10-week training program that is open to students who have completed their junior or senior years of undergraduate college OR first year of medical school.   This program is created to develop fundamental skills in various research methodologies in a defined project, leading to an end-of-summer poster presentation. At the end of the program the student is expected to present the research at a poster session for the whole Department of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Participating students are paid a stipend of $3,000 for the ten week program.

Summary: The Vanderbilt Medical Research Student Research Training Program (SRTP) is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and allows medical students to conduct research under the direction of an established scientist in the areas of diabetes, obesity, kidney disease, or digestive disease at Vanderbilt during the summer between the first and second year or second and third year of medical school. 

SRTP offers three areas of emphasis:  

Diabetes and Obesity – Research areas include pancreatic islets/insulin secretion, neuroscience related to obesity and diabetes, carbohydrate physiology, hormone action/signal transduction, immunology related to diabetes, complications of diabetes, exercise physiology, and patient education or behavior related to diabetes. 

Kidney Disease – Research areas include diabetic nephropathy, immune-mediated kidney disease, kidney fibrosis, hypoxia and cellular signaling, metabolism and inflammation in acute and chronic kidney disease, and psychosocial aspects of kidney disease. (Students selected for this program will participate in the Vanderbilt Center for Kidney Disease Student Research Training Program in Kidney Disease.)  

Digestive Disease – Research areas include epithelial integrity, gastrointestinal development and function, gastrointestinal physiology, inflammatory bowel disease, Helicobacter pylori infection, and GI-related cancer.

Program: Summer Research Program 

Summary: The MIR Summer Research Program offers undergraduate and medical students an excellent introduction to current radiological sciences research. You can start this 10-week program, which is based on approximately 40 hours per week. Areas of research include: breast imaging, cardiovascular imaging, contrast agent development, diagnostic radiology, digital imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, molecular pharmacology, neuroscience imaging, nuclear medicine, optical imaging, positron emission tomography, radioparmaceutical development, ultrasound, and x-ray computed tomagraphy.  Applicants selected for the Summer Research Program will receive $7,000 for a 10-week summer research period.
